Following his high-profile denial of entry into the United States for the FIFA World Cup, elite Somali football official Omar Artan published a strong message on social media calling for national unity and a total rejection of tribal divisions. The post, shared across his official social channels alongside a picture of him raising the Somali flag at a packed Mogadishu Stadium rally, addresses his experience and appeals directly to the conscience of the Somali people.
In his written statement, Artan emphasizes that true honor and dignity for a Somali person lie exclusively in Somalinimo, the shared identity of being Somali, rather than through regional or clan affiliations. He argues fiercely against the destructiveness of tribalism, writing that clan divisions and internal biases lead only to collective humiliation, isolation, and disrespect from the global community. He warns that when a society divides itself along these lines, it ultimately views itself as inferior and invites the rest of the world to look down upon it as well.
Artan challenges his followers to evaluate where the country currently stands due to ongoing clan fractures, asking them to contrast Somalia’s domestic state with how developed nations organize themselves to thrive globally. Reaffirming sentiments he expressed live to supporters upon returning to Mogadishu, Artan explicitly reminds the younger generation that Somalia belongs to them through good and bad times, urging them never to lose faith in their nation’s potential.
Artan, who was named the Confederation of African Football Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025, had traveled to the United States on a diplomatic passport and valid visa to become the first Somali in history to officiate a World Cup match. However, upon landing at Miami International Airport, he was detained, interrogated for 11 hours, and subsequently deported. While anonymous administration officials alleged vague security vetting concerns, the decision sparked massive public outrage in Somalia, where citizens viewed the deportation as geopolitical discrimination. Despite missing the tournament, Artan received a massive hero’s welcome in Mogadishu, was promised full financial compensation by FIFA, and was promptly appointed by UEFA to referee the upcoming UEFA Super Cup final in Europe.
