Somalia and Türkiye Advance Deep-Sea Drilling at Curad-1 Offshore Well

MOGADISHU (GG) — Somalia’s federal ministry of petroleum and minerals has confirmed that active offshore drilling operations are continuing at the landmark Curad-1 well in the Somali Basin. The exploration campaign, executed in a bilateral hydrocarbons partnership with Türkiye’s state-owned oil company, Turkish Petroleum (TPAO), represents the first officially sanctioned deep-sea drilling project in the modern history of the East African nation.

According to a technical project update published by Hiiraan on Friday, July 24, 2026, the drilling ship is currently penetrating Block 153, located roughly 372 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. Somali Minister of Petroleum and Minerals Dahir Shire Mohamed stated that engineers are testing the first exploratory well following a series of comprehensive 3D seismic surveys conducted across the territorial shelf earlier this year.

The deep-water operation is designated as one of the most logistically ambitious frontier oil explorations currently underway globally. According to technical specifications compiled by OilPrice.com, the drill is positioned in approximately 3,500 meters of water and is engineered to reach a total seabed depth of 7,500 meters. The state-backed campaign is expected to take up to 288 days to complete due to challenging maritime conditions in the Indian Ocean.

Government officials in Mogadishu have heavily prioritized the hydrocarbons initiative as a fundamental pillar for long-term fiscal independence and structural economic reform. The federal administration hopes that a verified commercial oil discovery will generate a consistent domestic revenue stream, stimulate regional infrastructure development, and attract broader international energy conglomerates back to the Horn of Africa.

Despite intense public interest and high market expectations, energy administrators have explicitly cautioned the public against premature speculation regarding immediate production. Reports from Wardheer emphasize that while early data models are encouraging, no official announcement has been made confirming the discovery of commercially viable or extractable oil reserves. The final geological assessment and formal core evaluations are mathematically projected to conclude between December 2026 and January 2027.

The long-term development timeline has also drawn significant domestic analysis and political debate. Speaking in an interview documented by the Somali, former Puntland planning minister Ali Haji Warsame noted that the current phase is strictly limited to exploratory test drilling rather than commercial extraction. Warsame asserted that even if the Curad-1 well yields positive data by the end of the year, full-scale commercial oil production and export logistics would require major international consortium alliances, realistically pushing initial commercial output toward 2034.
