SEATTLE, Wash. (GG) — Belgium decisively eliminated co-hosts United States from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a dominant 4-1 victory in their Round of 16 knockout match at Seattle Stadium on Monday night. A clinical first-half brace from forward Charles De Ketelaere combined with second-half goals by Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku shattered the tournament aspirations of the host nation, sending the Red Devils through to the quarter-finals.

The high-intensity victory at Lumen Field maintains Belgium’s historical dominance over the Stars and Stripes, mirroring a comprehensive friendly win achieved just weeks prior to the tournament. Head coach Rudi Garcia’s tactical setup successfully exploited defensive vulnerabilities in the American backline, managing the pressure of a heavily partisan home crowd to stay on course for the later rounds.

The pre-match buildup was dominated by political and administrative drama after FIFA took the rare step of suspending a red-card suspension for American top scorer Folarin Balogun following a direct intervention by political figures. While Balogun was cleared to start, the United States squad appeared completely disorganized from the opening whistle, struggling to handle the offensive movement of Belgian winger Dodi Lukébakio.

Belgium capitalised on their early territorial dominance in the ninth minute of play. Nicolas Raskin, who started in the midfield, delivered a precise cross that bypassed the central defenders to find De Ketelaere, who converted from close range past goalkeeper Matt Freese to open the score.

The United States found a brief lifeline in the 31st minute when Balogun drew a tactical foul from Brandon Mechele just outside the penalty area. Midfielder Malik Tillman stepped up to take the ensuing free kick, unleashing a curling strike that deflected heavily off the defensive wall and into the net to draw the sides level.

The home celebration proved exceptionally short-lived as Belgium responded just two minutes later. A breakdown in communication between central defenders Chris Richards and Tim Ream allowed De Ketelaere to break free in the box once more, drilling a low shot into the corner to reclaim the lead for the visitors before halftime.

Mauricio Pochettino altered his formation for the second half, introducing Giovanni Reyna to add creative impetus out wide. However, a severe goalkeeping blunder in the 57th minute effectively ended American hopes. Freese raced out of his penalty box to claim a loose ball but lost the physical contest to De Ketelaere, who nudged the ball to substitute Hans Vanaken to finish into an empty net.

The final blow landed deep in stoppage time when substitute Romelu Lukaku found space behind the exhausted American defense. The veteran striker calmly slotting home a clinical finish in the 93rd minute to put an exclamation point on a comprehensive victory.

With this result, Belgium advances to a marquee quarter-final clash against Spain on Friday, July 10, while the United States exits its home tournament before the final eight.
