DJIBOUTI CITY, Djibouti — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Djibouti on Saturday to participate in official ceremonies commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Republic of Djibouti’s independence.

President Mohamud’s working visit follows a formal diplomatic invitation extended by his Djiboutian counterpart, President Ismail Omar Guelleh. The high-profile state ceremony, held in the capital city, was attended by regional dignitaries, government officials, and international diplomats, highlighting the long-standing bilateral, cultural, and political ties between the two neighbouring Horn of Africa nations.

The independence day celebrations arrive during a period of intensified diplomatic engagement across East Africa, as both Mogadishu and Djibouti navigate shifting geopolitical dynamics and shared regional security priorities. Djibouti has historically been a critical strategic partner for Somalia, contributing thousands of military personnel to the African Union transition missions tasked with combating the Al-Shabaab insurgency and stabilizing federal institutions.

During the state event, President Mohamud extended his formal congratulations to President Guelleh and the people of Djibouti, emphasizing that the independence of the two nations remains deeply intertwined. The Somali head of state noted that the enduring solidarity between Mogadishu and Djibouti City serves as a cornerstone for maintaining peace, economic integration, and security cooperation across the wider region.

The leaders are anticipated to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the independence festivities to address ongoing security transitions in the Horn of Africa, particularly the upcoming restructuring of the regional peacekeeping architecture. Both administrations have expressed shared commitments to enhancing maritime security along the Gulf of Aden and collaborating on joint infrastructure projects to boost economic connectivity.
