ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (GG) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday for an official working visit aimed at resetting strained diplomatic relations and enhancing bilateral security cooperation.
The Somali head of state and his accompanying delegation of senior cabinet ministers were received by high-ranking Ethiopian government officials at the Bole International Airport. The unannounced diplomatic mission comes during a period of complex geopolitical shifts across the Horn of Africa, as both nations attempt to balance domestic political transitions with shared regional security obligations.
According to villa Somalia officials, the primary objective of President Mohamud’s working visit is to hold direct, high-level discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The dialogue will prioritize critical regional security frameworks, border management, and structural cooperation in counter-insurgency operations against the Al-Shabaab militant network, which continues to pose a significant cross-border threat to both nations.

The state visit represents a vital diplomatic step toward reviving formal communication channels between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa. Bilateral ties had previously experienced severe diplomatic friction following Ethiopia’s controversial maritime memorandum of understanding with the breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this year—an agreement that the Somali federal government vehemently denounced as an illegal infringement on its sovereign territorial integrity.
Beyond maritime borders, the two leaders are expected to focus heavily on the upcoming transition of the regional peacekeeping architecture. With the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia drawing to its conclusion, the strategic deployment and future mandate of Ethiopian troops stationed along the shared border remain a vital point of interest for both defense ministries to prevent any security vacuums that could be exploited by insurgent factions.
The bilateral assemblies in Addis Ababa are scheduled to proceed over the next 24 hours, with both administrations aiming to finalize a coordinated approach toward maintaining macroeconomic stability and commercial connectivity across East Africa.
