NAIROBI — Prominent Somali football official Omar Abdulkadir Artan has arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, for an official meet-and-greet tour following his high-profile exclusion from the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

Omar Artan Nairobi visit

Artan, who was named Africa’s Men’s Referee of the Year for 2025 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), made his first public regional appearance at the BBS Mall in the Eastleigh district of Nairobi. The Somali icon was received by a high-level delegation of regional dignitaries, including Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale, and Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdulillah, as part of a public demonstration of regional solidarity.

The regional visit follows a major diplomatic and sporting controversy last month when Artan was refused entry into the United States upon arriving at Miami International Airport. Despite holding a valid U.S. travel visa, a diplomatic passport, and tournament accreditation from FIFA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers subjected Artan to an 11-hour interrogation regarding regional security issues before enforcing an expedited removal from the country based on undisclosed “vetting concerns.”

Addressing a gathering of sports professionals and supporters in Nairobi, Artan expressed deep gratitude for the reception, stating that the immense backing from Kenyan sports enthusiasts made him feel entirely at home. The 34-year-old official emphasized his long-standing collaborative history with Kenyan assistant referees over the past four years, describing the partnership as a foundational element of his rapid rise within continental football officiating.

The decision by U.S. border authorities to block the tournament’s leading African referee prompted widespread criticism from international football circles and sparked allegations of systemic prejudice. FIFA President Gianni Infantinopreviously addressed the public outcry by confirming that while the global governing body cannot legally override sovereign immigration policies, Artan will be fully paid for his planned World Cup match assignments.

Despite missing the global showcase, Artan’s professional trajectory remains strong. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has formally appointed the Somali referee to take charge of the highly anticipated 2026 UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria, scheduled for August 12. FKF officials in Nairobi lauded Artan’s continued resilience, framing his upcoming European assignment as a definitive victory for African sports representation against institutional barriers.
