ATLANTA, Ga. (GG) — Reigning world champions Argentina staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in football history, scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory over Egypt in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 knockout match at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday. Trailing 2-0 deep into the second half, Lionel Scaloni’s side appeared destined for a shocking exit before a furious late rally extended Lionel Messi’s international career and booked a place in the quarter-finals.

The high-stakes victory salvages the South American heavyweights’ title defense following a masterful tactical performance by the North African underdogs. Egypt looked on the verge of becoming only the fifth African nation to reach a World Cup quarter-final after disrupting the holders’ buildup play and exploiting key defensive spaces.

The match began in stunning fashion when Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute. Defender Yasser Ibrahim rose highest at the far post to power a clinical header past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from a beautifully executed corner routine delivered by Marwan Ateya. Argentina received a golden opportunity to equalize just six minutes later when Haissem Hassan conceded a penalty for a late tackle on Nicolás Tagliafico. However, Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made an exceptional diving save to deny Messi from the spot—marking the captain’s second penalty miss of the summer tournament.

Egypt’s defensive resilience held firm through halftime, and they extended their advantage in the 67th minute. A lightning-fast counter-attack spearheaded by Mohamed Salah carved open the Argentine backline, allowing Mostafa Ziko to sweep a low finish into the net to give the Pharaohs a seemingly insurmountable 2-0 lead. Moments prior, Egypt had another potential goal disallowed after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review identified an infraction deep in the buildup.

With their world title on the line and less than 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Argentina mounted their stunning response. The revival began in the 79th minute when Messi delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, allowing central defender Cristian Romero to glance a powerful header past Shobeir to halve the deficit.

Driven by absolute urgency, the Albiceleste completely pinned Egypt back and found their equalizer in the 83rd minute. Fullback Gonzalo Montiel kneed a loose, deflected ball into the path of Messi, who redeemed his first-half penalty miss by striking a fierce half-volley that rattled off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. The goal marked Messi’s eighth of the tournament, catapulting him back into the sole lead for the 2026 Golden Boot race.

The historic turnaround was completed three minutes into stoppage time. After regaining possession on the right wing, striker Lautaro Martínez delivered a perfectly weighted cross toward the back post. Midfielder Enzo Fernández met the ball with a magnificent cushioned header, sending the massive contingent of Argentine traveling supporters into a frenzy.

Tears of pure relief flowed across the pitch after the final whistle as the Argentine squad mobbed their veteran captain. Scaloni’s side survived an extraordinary scare to carry the weight of South American hopes into the final stages of the tournament following Brazil’s earlier exit. Argentina will now travel to Kansas City on Saturday for a highly anticipated quarter-final encounter against the winner of the last-16 match between Switzerland and Colombia.
