Real Madrid have finalized a permanent agreement to sign left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a transfer worth up to €60 million.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Sunday that the transaction is fully completed, with all documents finalized following medical clearances. The European champions will pay an initial fixed amount of €55 million, supplemented by an additional €5 million wrapped up in performance-related add-ons. The 27-year-old Spanish international has already agreed to personal terms on a long-term contract and is set to officially link up with the squad upon the conclusion of his international duties.
The rapid progression of the deal comes at the specific request of newly reappointed Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho. Mourinho identified the former Brighton defender as his primary defensive target for the left side of the backline ahead of his formal return to work. Real Madrid senior officials moved rapidly over a 24-hour window to beat late interest from alternative Spanish suitors, including Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.
The departure follows internal friction at Stamford Bridge, where Cucurella publicly questioned Chelsea’s overarching recruitment structure and the dismissal of former coach Enzo Maresca earlier this year. Chelsea’s lack of European football after a tenth-place Premier League finish further facilitated the player’s desire to secure a move back to Spain.
With the paperwork complete, Cucurella becomes a cornerstone of Mourinho’s defensive reshuffle alongside fellow incoming arrivals. Chelsea will now rely internally on alternative squad depth at left-back under incoming manager Xabi Alonso.
