EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (GG) — Norway achieved one of the largest upsets in modern football history by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 matchup at the New York New Jersey Stadium. A late second-half double from star striker Erling Haaland guided the European nation to its first-ever World Cup quarter-final appearance, simultaneously prompting Brazilian icon Neymar to announce his immediate retirement from international soccer following the final whistle.

The tactical victory maintains Norway’s historically unique record against the South American powerhouse, remaining the only nation to face Brazil multiple times without suffering a single defeat. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to break down a resilient Scandinavian defense before being undone late in the second half by clinical counter-attacking execution.

The match began with early drama when Brazil was awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined Kristoffer Ajer had fouled Matheus Cunha inside the box. However, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes saw his spot-kick turned away by an exceptional save from Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, setting the tone for a frustrating afternoon for the Seleção. Brazil controlled long stretches of territory but historical data providers noted they were limited to just 34 percent possession across the match, their lowest recorded total in modern World Cup history.

Following a scoreless first half, Norway altered their tactical strategy to implement a patient passing style designed to fatigue the opposition. The deadlock was broken in the 79th minute when substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered an accurate cross from the left wing, allowing Haaland to leap over central defender Gabriel Magalhães and power a header into the back of the net.

As Brazil pushed additional numbers forward in search of an equalizer, Norway exploited the vacant defensive spaces. In the 90th minute, Schjelderup forced a turnover in midfield and slipped a pass to Haaland, who unleashed a low left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area to double the lead and claim his seventh goal of the summer tournament.

Neymar, who entered the pitch as a 67th-minute substitute due to a lingering calf injury, provided a late spark of hope for his country deep into injury time. The 34-year-old forward converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute of stoppage time following a physical altercation inside the area involving Casemiro. The goal allowed Neymar to reach an absolute milestone of 80 goals for the Brazilian national team, but it proved to be a mere consolation as the final whistle sounded seconds later.

An emotional Neymar collapsed to the pitch in tears before confirming to broadcasters that his tenure with the national team had reached its end. The defeat condemns Brazil to their earliest exit from a World Cup tournament since 1990, marking 24 years since the nation last lifted the global trophy.

Norway will now prepare to travel to Miami for their quarter-final tie on Saturday, where they are scheduled to face England. The English national team secured their progression to the final eight alongside Norway after overcoming a competitive challenge from co-hosts Mexico in a five-goal thriller earlier in the day.
