NAIROBI, Kenya – Today May 14 2026 at exactly 09:45 am Nairobi time, economic panic has gripped the country ahead of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) monthly fuel pricing cycle.
It’s just hours away and come amidst growing reports of localized shortages and a rush to panic buy at many service stations within Nairobi, Nakuru and Kisumu.
The Morning Crisis: What We Know Right Now
- Supply Gaps: This morning, over the last two hours, motorists have complained about the acute shortage of super petrol at several independent service stations around the peripheries of Nairobi (Ruiru and Kikuyu) and Western parts of Kenya.
- Global Factor: A volatile middle east is also taking a toll in the region. Mogadishu early this morning confirmed a whopping 77% jump in its petrol prices. Analysts are concerned Kenya will be forced to pass this cost to the consumer.
- EPRA’s Silence: So far at 9:40am, EPRA had yet to release its official pricing cycle calendar but sources at the authority confide that the fuel subsidy fund is running very low. There is therefore little room to stabilize prices.
Dr. Obwaka Scandal Clouds State House: On top of this political mess is a sensational statement issued 15 minutes ago by the widow of the late Dr. Obwaka alleging that her husband was “pushed to his death by a very senior State House official.”This is barely 15 minutes after the Presidency made a request for an additional 5 billion Kenyan shillings in an emergency spending review, further tensing up the political atmosphere.
Motorist Watch: Queues Forming: Already our field correspondents indicate that long queues are forming at some major shell and Total outlets along the Waiyaki Way and Thika Superhighway as Kenyans rush to refuel before the stroke of midnight.
” I have toured three stations around Kikuyu today and had no Super Petrol, am now at a major service station on Westlands and the queues are moving really slow,” James Njuguna a Nairobi Taxi Driver says.
Context: For the business community and an ordinary Kenyan, the fuel price change remains the most significant economic variable of the month. A price increment today coupled with existing shortages are likely to trigger an instant hike in matatu fares and cost of basic commodities. While already strained with by-elections in Emurua Dikirr, a fuel price increase would act as a spark to ignite mass public outcry.
What to Expect Next:
11:00 am: Usually at this time some “leak” of the new fuel prices appears on social media.
1:00pm – 2:30pm: Formal announcement and press release from EPRA including new prices.
Later in the afternoon: Reaction on potential Matatu fare increment from the Matatu Owners Association (MOA).
