Barcelona have officially completed the signing of England international winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. The 25-year-old forward has finalized his move to the Catalan club after completing a medical and signing a long-term contract running through to June 2031.
Sky Sports News and the BBC reported that the total financial package is worth £69.3 million (€80 million) inclusive of add-ons. Newcastle will receive an initial guaranteed fee of €70 million (£60.7 million), with the remaining €10 million structured as performance-related bonuses. The Premier League side has also secured a 20 percent sell-on clause as part of the formal agreement.
The transfer moved rapidly after Barcelona sporting director Deco accelerated discussions to beat German champions Bayern Munich to Gordon’s signature. The La Liga champions were determined to conclude all registration paperwork before Gordon travels to the United States with the England national squad for pre-World Cup training on Monday. Gordon passed his medical tests in Barcelona on Thursday evening ahead of his official unveiling at the club on Friday.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe expressed disappointment over losing the attacker but acknowledged the move represents a significant professional opportunity. Gordon, who finished the recent domestic campaign as Newcastle’s top goalscorer with 17 goals in all competitions, stated that leaving St James’ Park in a positive manner was highly important to him after three-and-a-half years on Tyneside.
