DALLAS, Texas (GG) — Cristiano Ronaldo was left visibly emotional and in tears following Portugal’s heartbreaking 1-0 elimination by Spain in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at Dallas Stadium. A dramatic 90th-minute match-winner from Spanish substitute Mikel Merino shattered the 41-year-old forward’s lifelong dream of securing football’s most coveted international trophy.

Following the final whistle, the Portuguese captain confirmed to reporters that his historic World Cup career has officially come to an end. The defeat closes the curtain on Ronaldo’s unprecedented six appearances at the global tournament, leaving his legendary trophy collection incomplete without a World Cup title.

The highly anticipated Iberian derby remained a grueling battle of attrition through 90 minutes, with both European giants struggling to break each other’s defensive lines. Portugal came closest to opening the score in the first half when Nuno Mendes hit a deflected strike off the crossbar. Ronaldo, who played the entire 90 minutes, managed three shots on target but was closely marked by the Spanish backline throughout the tense knockout fixture.

The decisive breakthrough materialized just as the match appeared headed for extra time. Spanish substitutes Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino combined flawlessly in the 90th minute, with Merino slotting home a precise finish past Diogo Costa to send Spain into the quarter-finals. Portugal was unable to conjure an equalizer during a frantic period of stoppage time, sparking scenes of dejection across the Portuguese camp.

“I am sad to be leaving the World Cup like this,” an emotional Ronaldo stated during his post-match media address. Despite the immediate heartbreak, the veteran forward emphasized that he leaves with a clear conscience, noting that he has given everything across a 23-year international career that yielded three major titles for his nation. Ronaldo finished his final World Cup campaign with three goals, including a knockout-stage penalty against Croatia.

While Ronaldo explicitly ruled out any future World Cup appearances, he stated he would take time with his family before making any rash decisions regarding his immediate future with the national team. At the club level, the all-time great remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr through 2027. Portugal’s exit also prompted head coach Roberto Martínez to officially announce his departure, marking the definitive end of an era for the national squad.
